Wagner’s ‘Die Walküre’ at the Teatro Real de Madrid

Pablo Heras-Casado returns to Teatro Real de Madrid to lead Robert Carsen’s production of Wagner’s Die Walküre. Heras-Casado, Teatro Real’s Principal Guest Conductor, began Wagner’s tetralogy last season, leading Das Rheingold in a celebrated production by Carsen. He continues to conduct Wagner’s colossal cycle throughout the next two seasons.

Running from February 12 to February 28, The Oper Köln production directed by Carsen sets the action in modern times, presenting a world of factions at war, with stage designs by Patrick Kinmonth and lighting designs from Manfred Voss. Pablo conducts a star-studded double cast, including Stuart Skelton & Christopher Ventris as Siegmund, René Pape & Ain Anger as Hunding, Tomasz Konieczny & James Rutherford as Wotan, Adrianne Pieczonka & Elisabet Strid as Sieglinde, Ricarda Merbeth & Ingela Brimberg as Brünnhilde, and Daniela Sindram as Fricka, among others. Critical acclaim from Das Rheingold:

“One of the points of interest of these performances was undoubtedly the presence of Pablo Heras-Casado at the head of the musical direction … the Nibelheim scene and the final one were brilliant. It has been 12 years since I first saw him conducting opera (Le nozze di Figaro in Bordeaux), and he is definitely in an excellent moment. Under his baton was the Teatro Real orchestra which proved once again that it’s the best pit orchestra in Spain. I look forward to the future installments of the Ring.” (Seen and Heard International)
