Schubert & Bruckner with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid

On January 20, Pablo Heras-Casado conducts the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid at the Auditorio Nacional de Música. Heras-Casado leads Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, commonly known as the “Unfinished,” which Schubert started in 1822, but completed only two movements even though he would live for another six years. Pablo recorded Schubert’s Third and Fourth Symphonies with the Freiburger Barockorchester for his debut disc on harmonia mundi. Purchase links and more information are available via his Recordings.

Completing the program, Heras-Casado conducts one of Bruckner’s best-known symphonies, his monumental Symphony No. 7, for the first time. Written between 1881 and 1883, the work was immediately popular with audiences and critics. Bruckner labored over the composition of his symphonies and frequently revised them at the suggestion of friends and critics alike. He revised his Symphony No. 7 in 1885, following the death of his idol Richard Wagner in 1883. Bruckner acknowledged him by using Wagner tubas in the symphony’s adagio.
