But the overall pace is rather cautious, lacking in brilliance – admittedly, it is opening night, and the conductor will no doubt add more oil to the wheels later on. Moreover, in the third movement, this interpretation finally gets into the spirit of the narrative, bringing the storm to a climax during the Prelude and exulting in the Tristanian accents when the two lovebirds meet. – Diapason
