Pablo Heras-Casado conducts the revival of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Wiener Staatsoper

After five months, the Wiener Staatsoper’s L’incoronazione di Poppea has returned. Pablo Heras-Casado conducts five performances of Monteverdi’s opera with the Concentus Musicus Wien, first performed last season in Vienna. Opening October 6, the co-production with the Salzburg Festival staged by Jan Lauwers, is to be seen next October 6, 9, 11, and 13. The cast will feature Kate Lindsey as Nerone, Slávka Zámečníková as Poppea, Xavier Sabata as Ottone, Szilvia Vörös as Ottavia, Willard White as Seneca, and Vera-Lotte Boecker as Drusilla. Next season the conductor will return to the Wiener Staatsoper in June for the premiere of L’Orfeo and the following season for Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, always with the Concentus Musicus Wien.

…Der Concentus Musicus – mit Dirigent Pablo Heras-Casado zusammengespannt – liefert als Gastorchester im Haus am Ring jenen edlen, schlanken Sound, der den Gesang trägt und substanzvoll animiert. Das Ensemble lässt auch jenen elastischen Tanzschwung entstehen, den die Inszenierung (und Mitglieder von Lauwers’ Needcompany) szenisch subtil aufnimmt. Bis auf den kläglichen Anfangsversuch, in die Stille ein, zwei Buhs unterzubringen, gab es einhelliges Lob für diese Koproduktion mit Salzburg.

…Der Klang jedenfalls, den Dirigent Pablo Heras-Casado dem personell stark aufgestockten Concentus dabei entlockte, der füllte die Staatsoper bis in den letzten Winkel – facettenreich, mit üppigen Farben ausgestattet, knarzend vor Reibflächen, satt an rauchigen Zwischentönen. Mit diesem sensationellen Debüt setzt der Concentus nicht nur ein vitales Zeichen in Sachen Originalklang, sondern geht seinen Weg als Pionier der Aufführungspraxis im 21. Jahrhundert mutig weiter.

…And let’s hear it for Concentus Musicus Wien, who brought the house down and would have made their late founder, Nikolaus Harnoncourt more than proud. Elevated from the pit and reinforced in numbers, they – under Pablo Heras-Casado’s capable baton – breathed authenticity and life into Monteverdi’s sparse score with authority. They have fabulous improvisers in their ensemble who understand Baroque style and have the ability to dance Monteverdi’s ritornelli and sinfonia into a hall the size of the modern Staatsoper. This has been too long in coming. Congratulations to house director Bogdan Roščić for another successfully tailored import. Poppea is an absolute must-see.
