Pablo Heras-Casado returns to the Wiener Staatsoper

For the third year in a row, Pablo Heras-Casado returns to the Wiener Staatsoper to conduct the last opera of his Monteverdi trilogy project, Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria.

He will lead the Concentus Musicus Wien once again, one of the most prestigious ensembles in the world in the baroque repertoire, and a cast of internationally renowned singers, starting (Ulisse) Georg Nigl, (Penelope) Kate Lindsey, (Telemaco) Josh Lovell, (Minerva) Isabel Signoret, (Eurimaco / Anfinomo) Hiroshi Amako, (Nettuno / Antinoo / Il Tempo) Andrea Mastroni and (Eumete) Robert Bartneck.

Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, based on the ending of Homer’s Odyssey, tells the sensational story of Ulysses’ return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The work was composed thirty years after L’Orfeo. In this epic story of love, temptation, and loyalty, audiences will be transported to ancient Greece as they follow the adventures of Ulisse, the legendary hero who must navigate treacherous waters and face the wrath of the gods to return home to his beloved family. With five scheduled performances on April 2, 4, 8, 11, and 14, this production of Ulisse by Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito, will be the perfect finale to Monteverdi’s trilogy.

Radio Ö1 will broadcast the premiere on Sunday, 2 April 2023 live from 6.30 pm. On Friday, 14 April 2023, the performance will be recorded by the in-house cameras and broadcast live and free of charge worldwide on play.wiener-staatsoper.at 7 pm. The stream will then be available as a catch-up for 72 hours. The performance will also be broadcast live from 7.00 pm on myfidelio.at.
