Wagner’s Ring Cycle at the Teatro Real

Beginning in the 2018/19 season, Pablo Heras-Casado will conduct his first-ever complete Ring Cycle at the Teatro Real, with performances spanning over four consecutive seasons. The first opera in the series, Das Rheingold, highlights an internationally renowned cast including Greer Grimsley as Wotan, Sarah Connolly as Fricka, and Samuel Youn as Alberich. The production, also seen at Oper Köln, is directed by Robert Carsen with stage designs by Patrick Kinmonth and lighting designs from Manfred Voss.

Following Das Rheingold, Die Walküre will be presented in January/February 2020; Siegfried takes place in February/March 2021; and Götterdamerung closes out the Cycle in January/February 2022.

Heras-Casado led another of Wagner’s masterworks, Der fliegende Holländer, at the Teatro Real in 2016. A DVD of this production is now available for purchase.

“A taut, thrilling Wagner debut from Heras-Casado coupled with a truly spectacular production by the Catalan director Àlex Ollé, who makes stunning use of video-projections and sets the opera in contemporary Chittagong …” (Presto Classical)
