Vienna Philharmonic debut and a return to London

This month, Pablo Heras-Casado leads some of Europe’s most renowned orchestras in acclaimed venues across the continent. He returns to the London Symphony Orchestra to lead a performance on January 17 at The Barbican, featuring cellist and frequent collaborator Alisa Weilerstein in her debut with the LSO. The programme includes Tchaikovsky’s Overture: The Tempest, Elgar’s Cello Concerto featuring Ms. Weilerstein, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. The Elgar was first premiered by the LSO in 1919, written in lamentation of the tragedies of World War I.

Pablo then travels to Salzburg for two concerts, including his highly anticipated debut with the Vienna Philharmonic, for the 60th annual Mozartwoche (Mozart Week). The first concert takes place on January 26 at the Haus für Mozart, and features the Camerata Salzburg, Salzburger Bachchor, and soloists including soprano Christiane Karg, mezzo-soprano Alice Coote, tenor Werner Güra, and baritone Christopher Maltman, performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

On January 30 Mr. Heras-Casado leads the Vienna Philharmonic in his first appearance with the orchestra, stepping in for Nikolaus Harnoncourt. The all-Mendelssohn concert at the Großes Festspielhaus, will include the composer’s Overture No. 4 in F major from “Märchen von der schönen Melusine”, Psalm 42 “Wie der Hirsch schreit” (As the Hart Pants), and Symphony No. 3 (“Scottish”). Soprano Dorothea Röschmann, tenors Werner Güra and Dániel Árvai, and basses Matthias Winckhler and Marcell Attila Krokovay are the soloists for this performance, which also features the Arnold Schoenberg Chor.
